Hon. Attorney General for the Republic of Malawi

Honourable Thabo Chakaka-Nyirenda is the 20th Attorney General of the Republic of Malawi, a role in which he serves as the principal legal advisor to the Government and custodian of the rule of law. In this capacity, he also holds several ex-officio positions, including Head of the Malawi Bar and Chairperson of the Malawi Council for Legal Education, overseeing standards of legal training and professional development within the country.

With a distinguished career spanning the public and financial sectors, Honourable Chakaka-Nyirenda brings extensive experience in governance, legal reform, and institutional compliance. Prior to his appointment as Attorney General, he served as In-house Legal Counsel and Manager of the Ethics and Compliance Division at the Reserve Bank of Malawi, where he played a key role in strengthening legal and regulatory frameworks for financial integrity and institutional accountability.

Earlier in his career, he worked as a Senior Legal Aid Advocate at the Legal Aid Department (now the Legal Bureau), and as a Senior State Advocate in the Ministry of Justice, where he handled complex litigation and offered advisory services on constitutional, administrative, and commercial matters.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Degree from the University of Malawi and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Financial Law from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom. His core areas of specialization include Financial and Commercial Law, International Investment Law, Financial Crime, Company Law, and the Law of Trusts and Asset Protection.

Known for his sharp legal intellect, integrity, and reformist outlook, Honourable Chakaka-Nyirenda continues to champion legal innovation in Malawi and beyond, with a strong emphasis on the intersection of law, governance, and sustainable development.
