Attila Massimiliano TANZI

Professor Tanzi is full Professor of international law at the Alma Mater- University of Bologna since 2006, adviser to the Legal Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, and President of the Italian Branch of the International Law Association. His expertise in international law, with an impressive track record in both practice and academia, enjoys worldwide recognition.
His professional experience in the UN system since 1987 is of particular importance. The first participation of Professor Tanzi in UN legal activities date back to 1987, as member of the Italian delegation in the closing session of the Special Committee on Enhancing the Effectiveness of the Principle of Non-Use of Force in International Relations in international relations. He has also been a member of the Italian delegation in the Sixth Committee and other legal committees and working groups in several UNGA sessions.
Professor Tanzi was elected President of the Legal Board of the UNECE 1992 Convention on transnational waters for two terms (from 2004 to 2012) and since 2013 he is Chair of the Implementation Committee of said Convention.
He has long standing wide experience in international dispute settlement. He has served as counsel and arbitrator in several interstate, investment and commercial disputes. He is a member of the ICSID Panel of Arbitrators. Professor Tanzi is also a former conciliator at the OSCE Court of Conciliation and Arbitration and a former member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), of the Special List of Arbitrators for Environmental Disputes of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and of the List of Arbitrators of International Development Law Organization (IDLO).
Professor Tanzi has effectively advised the Italian Government on international law issues at home and in several international disputes before major jurisdictional fora such as the ICJ and ITLOS, as well as before arbitration tribunals. He has been instructed by other governments from different regions of the world and intergovernmental organizations, attesting to the global recognition of his expertise.
Professor Tanzi’s several chairmanships of inter-governmental and non-governmental bodies, including upon re-election, demonstrates his ability to manage and coordinate complex bodies, as well as his marked propensity for collegiality. He has directed several university-public entities partnerships and research projects involving managing complex legal, administrative and accounting issues, which testifies to his ability to combine legal and managerial skills.
The curriculum of Professor Tanzi with his extensive and diverse publication record shows his strong international outlook with a special focus on Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Such international outlook is complemented by his excellent language skills in English, French and Spanish.
