Prof. Dr. Jan Kleinheisterkamp is an independent arbitrator and mediator based in Brussels. Having turned 50 in 2021, Jan decided to leave his position as a professor at LSE – after 20 years in academia – to focus on his practice in international arbitration and mediation. He continues to teach arbitration at LSE as visiting faculty.

He has accrued 15 years of experience as an arbitrator in international disputes relating to energy, construction, finance, joint ventures, sales and services. His arbitration work occasionally also includes disputes between investors and states. In 2020, the UK Government appointed him to the ICSID Panel of Conciliators. As well as being an accredited mediator in Belgium, he is a CEDR-qualified mediator and absolved the investor–state mediation training by ICSID/ECT/CEDR.

From 2014 to 2019, Jan served as a member of the Governing Body for Dispute Resolution Services of the International Chamber of Commerce, as well as a member of the Advisory Group on International Arbitration to the UK Government from 2013 to 2015. He has been heard various times by the European Parliament as an expert on international investment law and policy.

Jan is an internationally renowned academic and expert for international contracts, comparative law and conflict of laws, especially in international arbitration, as well as for investment treaty law and its intersection with EU law. He has published numerous articles in top peer-reviewed journals and authored and edited leading books in his fields of expertise.

With a double German and Peruvian nationality, Jan works and speaks fluently in English, Spanish, Portuguese, German and French.
