Katja YAFIMAVA

Dr. Katja Yafimava is a Senior Research Fellow at the OIES Gas Research Programme. She holds a D.Phil. in Geography and an M.Phil. in Russian and East European Studies from Oxford University. Dr Yafimava is an expert of the UNECE Group of Experts on Gas and a Vice Chair of the Group’s Bureau. She was an expert at the EU-Russia Gas Advisory Council during 2012-16.

Dr Yafimava’s main area of research at the OIES is EU regulation, including regulation of pipeline gas and LNG as well as regulation of decarbonisation, reflected in many OIES publications, including ‘From Natural Gas to Hydrogen: what are the rules for European gas network decarbonisation and do they ensure flexibility and security of supply?’ (2024), ‘EU Solidarity at a Time of Gas Crisis: even with a will a way still looks difficult’ (2023), ‘The TEN-E Regulation: allowing a role for decarbonised gas’ (2022), ‘Finding a Home for Global LNG in Europe: understanding the complexity of access rules for EU import terminals’ (2020), ‘Building New Gas Transportation Infrastructure in the EU – what are the rules of the game?’ (2018).

Dr Yafimava has also written extensively on Russian gas exports to Europe, including a book “The Transit Dimension of EU Energy Security: Russian Gas Transit Across Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova” (OUP 2011) and chapters in other books, including “The Russian Gas Matrix: how markets are driving change” (OUP 2014), “The Pricing of Internationally Traded Gas” (OUP 2012), “Russian and CIS Gas Markets and their Impact on Europe” (OUP 2009).

She has also written for Carnegie Centre, German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) and Italian Institute of International Affairs (IAI) as well as commented for various international media.
