Velislava Hristova represents clients in investor-State arbitration, complex commercial arbitration, and public international law matters. Dual-qualified in civil law and common law systems, she brings more than a decade of experience in arbitral practice, procedure and advocacy.
Velislava has acted in arbitrations across a broad range of industries under institutional rules including ICSID, ICC, LCIA, PCA and SCC, as well as in ad hoc proceedings governed by various laws. She regularly advises clients on matters concerning the protection of foreign investments under bilateral investment treaties and similar agreements. She also accepts appointments as an arbitrator and is added to the databases of all leading arbitral institutions around the world.
Before joining Hogan Lovells, she has worked with the international arbitration teams of leading US and Magic Circle law firms in three of Europe's major arbitration hubs - London, Vienna and Stockholm. She also practiced with two of the largest law firms in Bulgaria, recognized for their dispute resolution expertise.
With a strong commitment to thought leadership, Velislava has published more than 30 papers in prominent international journals and legal blogs dedicated to dispute resolution. Her exceptional writing skills have been recognized through prestigious international awards, including first place in the Young Practitioners and Scholars Essay Competition of the European Federation for Investment Law and Arbitration, and the CPR Institute's Outstanding Professional Short Article Award.
Velislava is a delegate of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR and a member of its Task Force on the use of Artificial Intelligence in International Arbitration. She also regularly participates as a delegate observer at the UNCITRAL Working Group III meetings on the investor-State dispute settlement reform and contributes to arbitration-related capacity building initiatives around the world.
She holds an LL.M. in International Commercial Arbitration from Stockholm University and specialized in Arbitration and International Commercial Law at Pace University in New York. Velislava further enhanced her expertise by attending the Paris Arbitration Academy in France, the Summer Course in International Arbitration organized by the International Chamber of Commerce, and the Advanced Course on ICSID Arbitration organized by the International Investment Law Centre at the University of Cologne in Germany.
