Recognition, enforcement and execution of arbitral awards in Africa: dos and don'ts
Presentation
While enforcement and execution in African countries can sometimes be perceived as a vain enterprise, reality on the field rather contrasts with this perception.
This panel will navigate the various issues relating to enforcement in Africa, with a strong focus on the OHADA area, in order to give a more subtle and precise understanding of the legal regime applicable in this area, and its pros and cons.
The panel will discuss the successive stages of the enforcement process, from tracing assets to making an arbitral award enforceable, and to eventually seizing assets.
We will also focus on the specific issue of enforcement against sovereign entities, especially State-owned companies.
Moderated by our litigation partner Jean-Sébastien Bazille whose practice has a strong focus on enforcement and execution of arbitral awards, this panel will gather prominent practitioners :
- Ashley Messick (asset tracer, Managing Director JS Held),
- Aurélie Chazai (attorney to the Cameroon and Paris bars, Chazai Wamba),
- Sylvie Ebohi (attorney to the Cameroon and Paris bars, HBE Avocats) and
- Julien Gontier (Counsel, Gide Algiers)
to provide a comprehensive presentation of the key features of the applicable legal regime as well as practical insights and war stories.
Make sure to register before 15 March on the Paris Arbitration Week website and secure your place, as places are limited for this in-person only event!
