Richard HAPP

Richard Happ is partner and co-head of Luther’s Complex Disputes team. Richard is a board member of the German Institute of Arbitration (DIS) and president of its Arbitration Council.

For the last 23 years, he advised and represented clients in national and international arbitration proceedings. Richard specialises in arbitration proceedings where a government is involved, in particular, investment arbitration proceedings, and in arbitration proceedings in the energy sector. With the exception of upstream oil and gas, he has worked on cases which cover nearly every aspect of the energy economy. Among his most well-known cases in the past where two cases for Vattenfall against Germany. Recently, he obtained for E.ON one of the largest awards ever against Spain.

Besides acting as counsel, he frequently sits as arbitrator and enjoys writing about arbitration law. Among others, he is the co-editor of the 2022 commentary on the new ICSID Rules and Regulations.
